I am doing a no buy at the moment, not a year long one as that's insane! But till mid March and it's not necessarily because i have issue with shopping but more because I love the clothes I already own so much and I want the time and space to reallt appreciate them. One thing I found infinitely helpful has been unsubscribing from every brands email lists. Even the ones I like. As I felt it led to doom scrolling especiallt when there were sales. I will still visit those brands websites but it will be when I want to and to look at what I want to look at not what I am being directed to by these never ending emails

Taking the time to really appreciate the clothes you have is such a great thing to do!

I totally agree, unsubscribing from brand emails is a great way to avoid some scrolling - this was one of the first steps I took, but I still end up scrolling (and ordering) more than I would like. Temptation can be anywhere, for me Youtube is definitely a big one, but also Substack can sometimes lead to scrolling. I want to change the cycle of ordering and returning.

The way I clicked out of your post after the first sentence to go and check on an item that I have my eye on for the next purchase of my low buy (it’s on a resale site so only 1 available but I have to wait until 2/1 to buy) had me really resonating with this post 😅. My area of weakness is more centered around thrift shopping than online shopping and I have found the biggest help is to avoid it as much as possible, which is much easier when you have to actually go to a physical store than click a few buttons on a computer. I’m excited to read more about how you will approach this!

So happy that it resonated with you! 2ndhand items or "last items available" can be sooo hard to resist. Have my eyes on a pair of flats on Vinted, and keep checking on them 🫣 I really want to change my relationship with online shopping and am working on some strategies. More to come when I've figured out which to try!

But I think the fact that you’re being very slow to hit the order button on those flats is a good sign!

In all honesty it probably has a lot to with that I haven't tried them on 🙈 I want to try them before comitting (shoes tend to be too narrow), and as there isn't a store that carries them near me, it would mean ordering a new pair online with the intention of returning them and that seems a little over the top especially when I want to reduce my online shopping ( but I just might end up doing it anayway at some point... the struggle is real 🫣)

Omg I just realized that this comment made it seem like I didn’t come back to read it all - I meant that the first sentence reminded me that I needed to check on an online purchase that I want to make. It was still there and I could read the rest of your article in peace 😅

It’s such a rabbit hole, Sigrid! I’m pausing on online browsing for clothing, accessories, and beauty products during my Winter No-Buy. I also prefer online shopping, for the reasons you mentioned, but intention had gone out the window and online shopping was becoming my only hobby, and one that was far from fulfilling. In fact, it gave me the opposite feeling of fulfillment - an insatiable feeling of lack.

I’ve been loving taking this break. In terms of strategy, I haven’t gone as far as unsubscribing to my favorite brand emails. I still read posts on Substack that focus on Personal Style and contain shopping links . For now, I just don’t click into them, and it’s been a relief.

It's so easy for online shopping to become a hobby! And in no way a fulfilling one. So happy that taking a break has been working for you. I have tried a shorter break before but often I tell myself that I'll just have a quick look and then end up scrolling for way too long...

I'm seriously considering taking a longer break - giving myself a pause from all the online possibilities and getting out of the habit of using online shopping as a time killer. If I truly want something I can go to a physical store, which would probably deter me in most of the cases 😂 Still mulling on the parameters. I'm not subscribed to brand emails but online temptation is everywhere. Youtube is definitely one of my downfalls.
